Raingutter Regatta
In the raingutter regatta, boats race down a narrow channel. It’s called Raingutter Regatta because the boats were originally raced in raingutters. The gutters have since been replaced by PVC pipes. Pack 271 uses the wind-powered version - sailboat designs where the boats are blown down the channel. This is an opportunity to teach sportsmanship. The Raingutter Regatta typically is held in November.

Raingutter Regatta Race Procedures
- Each captain brings boat to inspection table no later than 30 minutes before post time.
Captain goes to registration table where his name is added to racing bracket.
- The Captain blowing onto the sails propels the boat.
- No artificial means may be used, for example, no straws.
- The boats are powered only by the breath provided by the Scouts.
- The starter stands at the opposite end and calls the race. At the sound of “go” the captains, having placed the hands behind the backs, start to blow. The first to reach the other side first wins. The judge at the finish line will determine the
result of the race.
- Any captain who touches the boat during the race will be disqualified. Exception: If the boat overturns and the mast or sail touches the side of the rain gutter the captain may right the boat without advancing it.
- Cubs will take turns competing against each other in a double elimination format. Each boat that is eliminated once will enter the second chance bracket.
Boats that lose a second time will be eliminated, crushed and burned and the ashes turned over to the captain for proper burial. (We don't really burn the boats; they are returned to the captain wet, but unharmed.)
- Any disagreements will be taken up with the Admiral. All decisions are final.
